What is diamond clarity?

Clarity is a measure of how “clean” a diamond is. To be more exact, the size, number, and location of inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external) determine the clarity of a diamond.

Grading the clarity of a diamond

Clarity is graded under 10x power magnification and ranges from Flawless to Imperfect (see chart.) Clarity grades from good SI1 grades and up should be “eye clean” or free from imperfections to the naked eye. Naturally, the higher the clarity and the rarer the stone, the more precious and valuable it will be.

Popular clarity range for a diamond

The most popular clarity range for diamonds is typically in the SI1-VS1 range which should provide an eye clean stone and allow budget for other considerations such as color and cut.
