A Gift Givers Guide to Earrings (Help for Men)

by ml_visionstarts

This one is for the guys, because let’s face it, we could use some help with the gift giving process.

A wonderful gift for an important (or even unimportant) occasion is a blessed thing. The receiver is happy, and the giver is happy. Problem is what is the perfect gift? It could be a great pair of earrings. Seems simple – but what kind??

There are in fact countless styles, colors, materials, and price points for such a query, so let’s break it down the a series of categories that will give you a simple system to choose the best fit for your intended gift giving victim.

The three fundamental types of earrings are button shapes, hoop earrings, and drops, let’s start here for simplicity.

Buttons and Studs

Button earrings, including stud earrings, rest on the ear. Button earrings can be as small as a pinhead or as big as a hubcap (the limiting factor is not size, but weight. Earrings should typically be no more than 5 grams in weight for comfort.) Classic studs are the most popular button earrings and are the simplest form of adornment. (Note that any potential gift recipient who does not have diamond studs is a candidate and you can probably stop reading here.) Button earrings are also the only viable style for those wearers with non-pierced ears as they are able to hide and accommodate the findings that are necessary. Just because studs are so popular doesn’t mean there aren’t many creative and colorful options to this style. Keep an open mind and you may be delighted to discover beautiful and stylish alternatives that can be either refined or whimsical.   (great for short hair.)

Hoops

Hoop earrings are the second basic category here. A hoop goes around the ear. It can be tiny, as in the case of “huggy hoops” or huge, as in some of the big gold hoops worn by popular movie stars and musicians. Again, diamond hoops will be the most widely appreciated hoop of all, especially the “inside-outside” hoops which have gemstones facing forward on both the front and inside of the back edge of the hoop.   (best for narrow faces.)

Drops

Drop earrings finish the list of basic categories. Drops hang from the ear. They can be just below the love (short) or go all the way to the shoulders (we call those “shoulder dusters”) and anywhere in between. There are styles within the drop earrings category like “chandeliers” (big and blingy,) and even  pencil thin drops.

Now that we know our three categories let’s focus more wearer specific.

Metal Color: does she like white metals (silver, white gold, platinum) or yellow gold? Rose gold works here too!

Gemstone Colors: The best advice here is to compliment anything she may already own and enjoy. Lacking that, the rule of thumb is pastels and blue for blonds, greens and reds for red heads, earth tones, greens, and deep colors for brunettes.

Style: Is she professional? Keep it clean and crisp. Is she a free spirit? Make it more unusual. Does she like a period of design? Follow that period – vintage, classical, or modern – with your style choice. Essentially, be a good observer of her taste and you will likely be successful.

Finally, have a good advisor. Be comfortable with asking advice from a professional. A good advisor will help you immensely and guide you to good decisions within your budget whatever that might be.

Happy Hunting!
