In order to preserve the brilliance of your fine jewelry, a little care at home can go a long way. We’ve outlined some simple guidelines that will keep your jewelry looking its best between visits, and for generations to come. Check out this video for more detailed visual instructions.

Diamond Care

Even though diamonds are very sturdy, a tough blow can chip them; therefore, you should avoid wearing your diamonds white doing rough work, such as yard work, household chores or sports. If you do notice any loose stones, take the piece off and have it checked by a professional before wearing it.

How to Clean Diamond Jewelry

  • Soak your diamond ring in a warm solution of mild liquid detergent, a splash of ammonia, and water
  • Use a soft brush if necessary to loosen dirt
  • Swish the ring around in the solution, then rinse well with warm water
  • Pat dry with a lint-free cloth (or blow-dryer if you’re in a hurry)

Maintenance

We highly recommend bringing your jewelry into our studio for a complimentary “check-up” at least once a year to ensure your diamonds are secure in their settings and maintain their brilliance. We will give your Christopher Duquet designed pieces a professional cleaning and inspection—free of charge.

Gemstone Care

How to Clean Gemstones

While gemstones are durable, they require varying levels of care. Even simple soap-water soaks can be harmful to certain gemstones.

To clean Transparent Crystalline Gemstones, simply soak them in water with a touch of gentile soap. If necessary, use a soft toothbrush to scrub behind the stone.

Rubies, Sapphires & other Single-crystal Gems can be cleaned with a touch of ammonia in water to remove all films and add extra sparkle.

Opal and Opaque Gemstones (lapis lazuli, turquoise, malachite) are very porous stones that require special care. NEVER use an ultrasonic cleaner, ammonia, or any chemical solution when cleaning. These soft and porous gems are best cleaned by carefully wiping with a moist cloth.

Storage

Store your gemstone jewelry in a lined case or a soft cloth, so the gems do not touch each other or scratch the surfaces of your other fine jewelry.

Pearl Care

Pearls should be the last item you put on, and the first item you take off. Makeup, hair spray, perfume and other chemicals are very harmful to pearls.

How to Clean Pearls

Wipe pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth after each use to remove build up, dirt and oil
For a more thorough cleaning, pearls can be washed in a mild soap (Ivory Flakes) and water
Wrap cleaned pearls in a thin, damp cotton towel to dry

Storage

Pearls should be stored separately, away from hard objects or jewelry that may scratch the pearls’ soft surface. To avoid scratching, wrap them in linen, soft cloth, or place in a soft pouch. Store your pearls flat, as opposed to hanging, to avoid premature stretching of thread.

Maintenance

Pearls should be re-strung every 1-3 years, depending on how often you wear them. The strand should be knotted between each pearl to prevent rubbing against one another or slipping.
